Ever find yourself nose to leaf with a wild plant, wondering if it would be any good to eat? Alaska has a wealth of edible wild plants--but there are some poisonous ones, too.

If Redoubt volcano has you twiddling your thumbs inside, pick up a copy of Alaska's Wild Plants by Janice J. Schofield. You'll learn not just which plants to eat but when and how to harvest them, along with tips for their medicinal use, too. It's slim enough to tuck into generous jacket pockets and you'd hardly notice it in your pack, but it's disappointingly just a bit too large to fit in a pants pocket.

At the time of this writing, there's still snow on the ground--but it'll be gone before you know it. What better way to spend mandatory indoors time than planning a summer harvest?
