After months of unrest, Redoubt volcano finally blew its top. More than once. And it's still rumbling.
The most obvious impact of the volcano's eruptions, so far, has been on air travel. While the Ted Stevens Anchorage Interntional Airport has so far remained open, numerous flights have been canceled. Travelers are encouraged to check in with their individual airlines for volcano updates before heading to the airport.
The ashfall, although light, has also had an effect on outdoor recreation in Southcentral Alaska. Fine volcanic ash can penetrate and damage the moving parts of snowmachines, four wheelers, generators, cars and trucks, chainsaws--just about anything mechanical. The best solution is to leave your vehicles parked and machinery turned off when possible. If ashfall is expected in your area, you may also want to cover your vehicle(s) with a tarp.
Falling ash can also wreak havoc on the respiratory systems of the very young, the very old, and those with respiratory difficulties.
Needless to say, many outdoor recreationists will be canceling or revising their activities in areas where ashfall is expected. For the latest ashfall advisories, visit the National Weather Service's Redoubt coordination page. Then check out our Redoubt reading list for interesting outdoor books to keep you entertained if you're stuck inside.
