Wine Tasting at Villa Maria.
Wine Tasting at Villa Maria.
taken by Dan Eddy

Another month has passed and "The Holidays" are just around the corner so a number of local stores are featuring holiday-themed wine tastings like Gator Spirits and Fine Wines. This month's "Second Tuesday" Tasting is all about wine to go with turkey, and ham, and stuffing and green bean casserole and so on. Part of the trick with Thanksgiving is to choose wines that can work with many disparate flavors. This is a challenge, perhaps, but not insurmountable. Remember you are trying to please everyone so you can either 1. not try at all or 2. get a sampling of different wine styles and do an impromptu home tasting. So your elderly aunt has to have White Zinfandel and your favorite uncle has to have Beaujolais Nouveau, bring them, make your family happy, but also try an interesting assortment of food friendly wines like California Zinfandel, Australian Shiraz and Argentine Malbec.

In that holiday mode, Mario's Bar and European Bistro has a Sunday Tasting pairing wine with Red Velvet Chocolate Truffle cake, which is locally made. Focusing on food and wine pairings there is a "Cheese Tasting" at Dorn's Liquors and Wine Warehouse next week, hosted by Randy Gersdorf, featuring three varietals of wine and the cheeses that work best with them: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Malbec. They will host the same tasting on two different nights and the cost is $25 per person, and certainly worth a real exploration of wine and cheese flavors. Remember that many of our local wine locales feature weekly tastings for free so check out the "Link List" to the right and visit their individual sites for more details. Also, remember that Local Wine Events.com is a great resource, one that more wine bars should utilize to get their Tasting info out there. Here are the Gainesville wine tastings I've found so far:
