Use white face paint this Halloween for a New  Moon Halloween look

With the recent discovery of harmful additives in commercial Halloween face paint, why not keep your child safe and save a little pocket change by making your own Halloween face paint.

The FDA reported through a recent study on children’s Halloween face paint products that of 10 popular brands studied that four of 10 products had unhealthy nickel levels; that two of 10 had high cobalt levels; and five of 10 had spiked chromium levels.  Almost all ten face paint products had many labeling problems, some face paint claiming to be hypoallergenic when they were not. One product "was advertised on the package as nontoxic and hypoallergenic, [and] had some of the highest levels of nickel, cobalt and lead. With these scary statistics, it's much safer, not to mention, more fun, to make your own Halloween face paint.

Making your own homemade face paint, as well as several other fun, scary effects like scars, old-age/white/vampire makeup and fake blood are a great way to save money while keeping your kids safe from nickel, cobalt and lead, which many parents don’t automatically associate Halloween face paint with.  These homemade face paint and Halloween effect make-up tricks are recipes are also great for last minute costumes and most importantly, for creating a safe Halloween with homemade, natural face paint and special effects make-up.  Here are some great tips sure to give the same great results as store-bought Halloween face paint, without all the harmful chemicals.

Homemade Face Paint Ingredients

  1. 1 tsp of cornstarch
  2. 1/2 tsp of cold milk
  3. 1/2 tsp of cold cream
  4. Food coloring (if white face paint is needed, use white or very pale face base and white baby powder)

Make sure to let dry.

  • In a bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold milk until dissolved.
  • Add cold cream and mix until smooth.
  • Tint to the desired shade with food coloring.
  • Spread it on with fingers or a paintbrush.

*I will say that one reader found the consistency a little off, if that happens add more powder to thicken and be sure to give it time to dry.

Alternately, this is a recipe for clown make-up:

Blend on a paper plate:

2 tblsp. shortening

5 tsps. cornstarch

1 tsp. flour

Dab of Vaseline

Add food coloring for various colors.

Make sure to let dry

Fake Blood Ingredients

  1. Light Corn Syrup
  2. Red food coloring
  • Fake blood can be quickly whipped by combining light corn syrup and red food coloring to desired consistency.
  • Mix the two together with carefully to avoid air bubbles.  This is great for dripping or spreading.  Make sure to let it dry before you head out for the night. (For fast, non-drying blood, you can always use ketchup.

How to Make a Scar

  1. Pink tissue paper
  2. Light Corn syrup
  3. Lemon or vanilla pudding (optional).
  • For a good Zombie Land or Vampire scar, take some pink tissue paper and mix it with corn syrup. The paper will turn into a squishy paste that you can apply to your face and hands to create sores and raised cuts and scars.
  • For a more disgusting effect, try using some green tissue paper mixed in and making some infected boils! Lemon and vanilla pudding make great pus, you can have it dripping from your  wounds.

Old-Face Makeup or light Make-up for Ghosts and Vampires

  1. Baby Powder
  2. Eye Liner
  3. Purple Eye-shadow
  • Brush it through hair to get that grey look and blend it into the skin to create a grayish, dry effect.
  • Using dark eyeliner to draw wrinkles and smudge with your finger. You may also want to use a purple eye shadow to create hollows in your face and under the eyes for more effect.
  • This works great as a base for sexy vampire makeup, also.

Cat Make-up

  1. Black gel liner or a black liquid liner and black pencil liner
  2. White face paint
  3. Black eye shadow
  4. Pink lipstick
  5. Concealer
  6. Mascara
  7. Pink blush
  • Prime your lids with concealer.
  • Put your eye shadow on;  apply dark, smokey look or just do lid with a grey or black shadow.  Do not apply dark shades past the crease.
  • Apply your liquid eyeliner in a cat eye formation, extending the thickness of the line from the middle of the eye outward.
  • Apply black mascara
  • Put two rosy circles on your cat cheeks.
  • Using liquid eye-liner, draw three lines on each cheek from mouth  for whiskers
  • Use pink eye lipstick on lips and nose for a pink nose.
