Tuesday’s election has once again proven that the self-righteous Right-Wing of this nation are well-funded and pro-activist as their record for defeating state referendums recognizing same-sex marriages remains perfect at 31-and-0. The LGBT community in the State of Maine is the latest group of Americans who see themselves denied their bid for equality, when voters repealed a state law that would have allowed same-sex marriage. The law had been passed by the Maine legislature in May and then signed into law by Governor John Baldacci (D), but the law had been on hold pending the vote.
"Question 1" as it was called in Maine, was aptly named because this question is a primary question. There are no frills, no hemming-and-hawing around this question, as it is the fundamental question of all Americans. All other questions follow Question 1 because it addresses a person’s right to be granted the equality to live a normal life, with all the same legal and social benefits as everyone else, and to enjoy that life to its fullest, the same as everyone else. Yet each time the LGBT community gets their foot in the door to equality, the Right-Wing machine cranks up and spews out a steady stream of television commercials which misinform the public using tactics of fear to justify discrimination.
These same people who claim to be “real” patriots and “real” Americans time after time vote for the unconstitutional continued discrimination of same-sex couples and they do it because “The Bible told them so.” Their biblical references are not only weak and contentious, but they are also man-made. The socially conservative evangelicals are willing to strip LGBT’s of their 14th Amendment right to equality based on a few archaic biblical references. These “Patriots” are so blinded by their religious fervor they have been duped into viewing the hard-working, loving men and women of the LGBT community as second-class citizens, and are willing to do so, based on narrow interpretations of Biblical scripture.
Even having this Christian-based and Christian-manufactured belief as the key argument against government recognized and protected same-sex marriage is supposed to be prohibited by the First Amendment, which says that Congress "shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." Laws against equal rights based on scripture deny the LGBT community of their primary rights under the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and all because the evangelicals are afraid of gay people.
Why does fearing God have to include fearing gays? God only knows.
