Indian grocery stores are concentrated in the areas of San Jose and Fremont where there is a large Indian population. However, that does not mean that Indian food and Indian grocery is not popular among people from other cultures. In fact, walk into any Indian grocery store and you are sure to find people of various ethnicities shopping to get their Indian food fix.

Starting this week, we will examine one Indian grocery store each week. You will find all the details on the kinds of products available in that store, prices, and discounts. Keep watching this space for new information about Indian grocery stores in San Jose.

There are some large Indian grocery stores in San Jose that are comparable to American grocery stores like Safeway and Nob Hill. One suce store is Kamal Spice House located on N Capitol Ave., San Jose. This store has a wide variety of Indian grocery right from seeds and spices to readymade curry powders and masalas. They also sell fresh flatbreads called parathas in several flavors including Methi paratha (Fenugreek bread), Aloo paratha (Potato bread), and good old roti.

There are aisles and aisles of spices and Indian snacks. Getting nostalgic about Maggi or Top Ramen noodles from back home in India? You will find all that here. There are also readymade bhelpuri mixes that you can mix with the bottled sauces sold here to make your very own bhelpuri (popular Indian street food) at home. They also have a large area for fresh Indian vegetables and also an impressive frozen food section that sells frozen samosas, kulfi, and other Indian food.

Prices are reasonable with 3 ounces of garam masala for $1.49, frozen Indian vegetables are for $1 each (8 ounces) when on sale, and fresh vegetables generally cost less than those in American grocery stores.

When you are there, make sure to check out their homemade food section. You will find customers raving about their fresh curries, hot naan, and lipsmacking chaat (on weekends only). Several customers take their curries home when they are short on time for cooking from a scratch.
