Kirstie Alley will return to regular TV with a new A&E reality series, but are viewers ready for yet another weight loss reality show, like The Biggest Loser? The A&E channel hopes so, and has ordered 10 episodes of a new reality TV series that will document Kirstie’s efforts to lose weight (again) while she balances the challenges of being a single mom.
Kirstie Alley is best known for playing Rebecca Howe on the Emmy awarding series Cheers from 1987-1993. She has also been in various movies, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Blind Date and Woody Allen’s Deconstructing Harry.
In 2005, Kirstie Alley’s weight went up to 200 pounds, and she headlined a “mockumentary” series for Showtime called Fat Actress. She played herself in the short-lived series, and became an advocate against obesity, as well as a spokesperson for the Jenny Craig weight loss program. To cap off her tremendous weight loss success, Kirstie appeared on Oprah, clad in a bikini, and announced to the viewers that she successfully lost 75 pounds.
In May of 2009, Kirstie told People magazine that she gained back the 83 pounds she lost, but that she was ready to try again. It looks like she will do so yet again in the public spotlight, but this time she will involve her children and home life. Will the public tune in for another ride on Kirstie Alley’s weight loss roller coaster? A&E’s non-fiction/alternative programming senior VP Robert Sharenow released a statement that reads, “Kirstie is exactly the kind of star A&E is drawn to. Her personal life has been playing out in the media for years, but this will be the first time she’ll be opening up her home to reveal her real life for the cameras.”
The untitled docu-series will air sometime in 2010.
