Back in 1975 Pete Townshend's already classic rock opera, Tommy, was made into a motion picture and brought to theaters everywhere.
The film has a major plot twist. Pete Townshend's original Tommy had Tommy's father come back from war and murder the lover in a fitted rage, however in the film, the lover murders his father after the ensuing argument.
The film by Ken Russell starred a number of high profile actors of the time. Among the cast was Roger Daltrey as the grown Tommy, Ann Margaret as Tommy's mother, Oliver Reed as the lover/boyfriend, Tina Turner as the Acid Queen, Elton John as the Pinball Wizard, Jack Nicholson as the Specialist and Keith Moon was Uncle Erny. Eric Clapton also appeared in the movie as the Preacher and the Who appeared as the "church" backup band. The Who also appeared as the "background" band for Elton John during his electric performance of Pinball Wizard.
The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards, Ann Margaret as Best Actress in a leading role, and Pete Townshend for best Original Score. Ann Margaret did win a Golden Globe for her performance.
This movie of course was a full musical, which required all of its stars to sing their parts. It is on this rare occasion that you see and hear Oliver Reed, Jack Nicholson, and Ann Margaret put their "pipes" to the test.
The movie was re-released on DVD back in 1999. It was digitally remastered in Dolby Digital 5.0. The DVD contains the full screen version and wide screen version of the film on each side of the DVD.
