In September of 1978 Who drummer, Keith Moon, died. The band had reached a crossroad as to either continue as the Who or call it a day. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwisle decided to continue. With this decision they had an impossible task, find a replacement for the beloved Moon. Not an actual replacement, but someone to play the drums and keep the beat.
They decided on Kenney Jones a friend of the band. Jones was actually with Moon the night he died. They both attended Paul McCartney's preview party for The Buddy Holly Story. Jones also was credited for playing a bit on the Tommy movie soundtrack album.
Jones at the time was a seasoned veteran drummer. He played with Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, and Ian McLagan in The Small Faces and later with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood with The Faces. Jones played backbeat on a number of successful tours with the Who in the late 70's and early 80's, including 1982's "Farewell" tour. He played on two Who albums, 1981's Face Dances and 1982's It's Hard. Jones would reunite with the Who on and off through the 80's to perform for special occasions, which inlcuded a set at Live Aide in Wembley Stadium in 1985. It's reported that Roger Daltrey forced Jones out of the band for the Who's full reunion tour in 1989. Session drummer Simon Phillips replaced Jones for the tour.
In the 90's Jones kept a low profile. He played and recorded one album with Paul Rodgers (Free/Bad Company frontman) in the group Law in 1991. Law split up that same year. Jones sporadically appeared on recordings with other musicians. Then in 2005 he formed the Jones Gang with Rob Hart and Rick Willis. They recorded one album that same year entitled Any Day Now.
