Puget Sound Energy's expansion of its Wild Horse wind energy facility in Kittitas County entered service on November 9 with a 19 percent increase in capacity, bringing total capacity to 273 megawatts.
Before Wild Horse's expansion, the facility was producing an average of 642,000 megawatt-hours of power per year, enough to supply the electricity needs of 60,000 households.
In addition, PSE added 50 kilowatts to Wild Horse's solar photovoltaic array, bringing the array's total capacity to 450 kilowatts. The solar expansion includes 350 modules manufactured by Silicon Energy of Arlington, in Snohomish County.
The Wild Horse facility is on Whiskey Dick Mountain, 16 miles east of Ellensburg. PSE's wind capacity totals 430 megawatts. One megawatt of wind power capacity can produce the electricity needs of 225 to 300 average U.S. homes. Washington is the number 6 state in the U.S. for wind power capacity, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
