A guide to the fuel economy ratings of 2010 model vehicles has been released by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency.

The 2010 Fuel Economy Guide offers city and highway mileage ratings for consumer vehicles weighing less than 8,500 pounds.

According to EPA, "Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides an estimated annual fuel cost. The estimate is calculated based on the vehicle’s miles per gallon (mpg) rating and national estimates for annual mileage and fuel prices. The online version of the guide allows consumers to input their local gasoline prices and typical driving habits to receive a personalized fuel cost estimate."

Hybrids captured nine out of the top 10 slots for the most fuel-efficient 2010 model vehicles, according to EPA estimates. Leading the pack is the Toyota Prius, rated at 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. (Depending on how they're configured, hybrids can be more fuel-efficient in city driving than in highway driving.)

EPA figures show that the least efficient models are high-performance sports cars and luxury cars that have small market niches because of their high prices. At the bottom of the pack is the Lamborghini Murcielago, which delivers 8 mpg in the city and 13 mpg on the highway.

EPA also provides listings of the most fuel-efficient vehicles by class.
