Upon entering Plaza-Midwood’s Snug Harbor any Thursday night, the first thing you will encounter is a very different vibe. This is because Thursday nights are the creation of Scott Weaver, and they are anything but ordinary. From patrons with painted faces to scantily-clad Go Go dancers, Thursday nights at Snug Harbor truly are a celebration of diversity. With some of the best people watching available in Charlotte coupled with no cover charge, prepare yourself for an evening that promises to be entertaining regardless of who you are by day.
Professionals, artists, hipsters and punks are a few of the eclectic characters you will encounter. “I've always been outspoken regarding my feelings about diversity, acceptance, community and participation,” states Weaver. This sentiment is evident in both the performers on stage and the patrons. SHIPROCKED! truly is a unique experience for Charlotteans.
The music spans generations, jumping from Depeche Mode one minute to MGMT the next. The only consistent theme in the music is that you will be able to dance, and the patrons definitely enjoy dancing. Throughout the evening, Weaver will make announcements and even occasionally conduct skits with his team or celebrate attendee milestones such as birthdays and graduations. The Go Go dancers perform throughout the evening earning tips, so do not hesitate to support their performance.
Intermittently there will be a theme for the evening, sometimes tied to a good cause such as gathering school supplies for local children. The themes are as varied as the guests.
“The inspirations are varied. Movies, songs, decades, politics and pop culture all influence my ideas. And the performers at SHIPROCKED! have total freedom to take an idea and run with it and interpret it however they want. And they often come to me with ideas for theme nights as well,” explains Weaver.
The standard SHIPROCKED! nights are conducted every Thursday evening, however there is going to be a special Friday night SHIPROCKED! on October 30th. Dubbed the SHIPROCKED! Halloween Carnival, guests can expect all of their carnival favorites such as bobbing for apples, a kissing booth and a costume contest. Visitors should be aware that when Weaver adds his twist to a Halloween event, expect the unexpected. “We will be turning the volume way up that night in the performances, costuming and décor,” exclaims Weaver. Be prepared for what has the potential to be one of the best Halloween parties in the city, and don’t forget, it’s free.
