George’s Greek Café (the third in a chain) located at 5252 Faculty Road in Lakewood, Calif., opened its doors last week with welcome arms from foodies all over the area. Owner Jimmy Loizides offers his mother’s family style Greek recipes with dedication to preserving them in the traditional way in which they were originally made.
The menu is abundant as is the wine list, making this the perfect place to take the office crowd, or your book club for lunch. There’s something for everyone. They have a well stocked bar as well, with premium labels.
‘A must have’ on their menu are the lamp chops, caramelized to perfection. Don’t expect the usual Spanakopita with its layers of phyllo dough and a small blemish of spinach and feta. These are heartier and more home style brimming over with a delicious concoction of spinach and cheese.
The salads are abundant; even the small salads are an oxymoron in that they are a meal in themselves; fresh and delightful.
The décor is charming with murals, water fountains and statuettes provocatively placed so that the eye is entertained anywhere it may roam.
Jimmy Loizides was there greeting guests and giving his third restaurant and its patrons the special attention they deserved. (Friends that had just stopped by yesterday- told me he gave them a bottle of wine on the house- teasing and joking with them about what the latest gossip was.) That’s Jimmy, friendly, open and generous. His staff is warm and friendly as well. Today, it was especially crowded for the restaurants second week in action and spirits seemed to run high as everyone enjoyed their food and conversation- some of the guests were dressed in Halloween costumes, obviously enjoying a work-day treat; adding to the enjoyable atmosphere.
