Denver Health Examiner
Donna Feldman grew up in New Jersey with a nutrition-obsessed mother who put wheat germ in everything. She rebelled, but during a college all-nighter, she picked up a copy of a popular nutrition paperback, eventually earning a Master of Science in Nutrition at Cornell University. She now has a private practice in nutrition counseling in Boulder County. Contact her at health.examiner@mindspring.com.

Health headlines: the good, the bad and the weird

The Good:

Deaths from auto accidents

have declined 9% since the beginning of the year.  Why.  The theory is that, as people are driving less, there are fewer cars to get into accidents.  This is also good news because it implies that maybe some people are walking or biking more, burning fat calories instead of gasoline calories.

The Bad:

Commercial drivers with medical conditions are causing more accidents when they experience medical emergencies while driving, causing hundreds of deaths and injuries.  In one particularly horrendous example, the driver of a day-care bus crashed into a highway bridge, killing 4 of the 6 children on board.  The cause: an undiagnosed sleep disorder.  Of course, all drivers could experience emergencies, but it's much less critical if the person is slumped over the wheel of a mid-sized car rather than an 18 wheeler going 80 mph.  Safety regulations proposed in 2001, including  minimum standards for determining when people are medically fit to drive commercial vehicles, have not been implemented yet by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The Weird:

Radovan Karadzic, former Serbian leader accused of war crimes (mass murder) in Bosnia, eluded capture for years by posing as an alternative medicine expert.  His expertise - human quantum energy.  His alias - Dragan Dabic David.  He cultivated a flowing white beard, a sure sign of alternative medicine wisdom.  His website, in Serbian, features photos of jewelry, perhaps with quantum powers.  If you click the "Programi" link, you can recognize many major medical problems that he apparently can heal with human quantum energy: Depresija, Diabetes, Astma, Multipla skleroza, Autizam and Sexualne Smetnje (got me on that one).  There's even a Chat Room.

All of which shows, it's pretty easy to set yourself up as an Alternative Medicine expert, and the profession is apparently open to anyone, even terrorists.  This brings up interesting possibilities for locating Osama bin Laden.

And the Confusing: The FDA now believes raw jalapeno peppers may have contributed to the recent, and ongoing, salmonella outbreak.  The same strain that has caused dozens of cases was found on a single pepper from a Texas supplier.  Whether this pepper is Ground Zero, or just a fluke, is not known.  Meanwhile the FDA is now warning against eating raw jalapeno peppers, at least until some other fresh vegetable is implicated.
