Calorie Lab's Obesity Map - Well at least we're green in something.
Of course, a telephone survey is only as accurate as the respondents are honest. As Dr. William Dietz, head of CDC's nutrition division points out, the heavier you are the more you underestimate your weight, especially when talking to strangers on the phone. It's likely true obesity rates across the country are higher.
Why is Colorado thinnest? Dietz says it's because our state has a reputation for exercise. But that doesn't explain whether exercisers choose to live here, or whether people take up an active lifestyle after moving here for other reasons.
Of course, obesity isn't the only interesting health statistic. Here are some others for Colorado:
- Almost 18% of adults say they don't engage in any physical activity.
- Colorado ranks 49th for overweight youth
- Most common cancer for men: prostate. For women: breast. Second most common for both: lung.
- Most common infectious disease reported for 2007: chronic Hepatitis C, with far more cases (3436) than second most reported disease, chicken pox.
Where did the data come from: Calorie Lab uses data from a telephone survey of 350,000 adults, conducted for the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.
