This Thursday, November 12th, La Bottega in Coconut Grove will be hosting a wine tasting featuring wines from Peter Figge and the Perry Moore winery. The tasting will start at 5:30pm, and run until 7:30pm (often later). The venue is located at 3540 Main Highway, in Coconut Grove. This is just South of the downtown Grove area. There is a charge of $20.00 per person for the tasting. Tom Henderson, one of the owners of Perry Moore, will be at the tasting to provide information and insight into their wines.

I've tried all of the wines to be presented, and they're ALL quite good. From Peter Figge, they are going to be pouring his Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. I'll write about the wines in-depth after the tasting, but in general, his Chardonnay tend to be delicately fruity on the nose and tongue. Their finishes are nice; in the 07 vintage (both his Pelio and La Reina) I got a wonderful peaches-and-cream flavor. That wasn't as noticeable in the 08, but there were still nice peach flavors in the wine. His Pinots are very nice! Earthy, cigar-box, stone fruit, leather, with a hint of roses on the nose, and Blackberries, milk chocolate, blueberries, and faint leather on the tongue. The Syrah was rich, very velvety and pleasant, with peppers, cherries, and dark fruit on the nose, berries, coffee, and even a bit toasty on the tongue. A very nice wine.

If I had to describe the difference between the Perry Moore wines and the Figge, I'd have to say that Figge's wines are fun, Moore's elegant. Both are a great drink, but in terms of depth, I think the prize goes to Perry Moore. I tried four of his wines: Ovation, a nice, sexy Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Rich, velvety, and delicious on nose and tongue; Stagecoach, a single vineyard Cab that that's got a great mouthfeel and a lot of complexity; Dr. Crane, another single vineyard cab that's also elegant, but a little more fruit-forward than the Stagecoach, and the To Kalon, another single vineyard Cab; this was lighter than the other two, but still full-bodied.

So - want to try these wines? Be there on Thursday!
