In our E3 travels, Adam Mills and I were introduced to a then unknown game made by Playlogic. We were shuffled into a demonstration room with other press and the speaker started to show us this odd 3D cartoon game called Fairytale Fights that looks like a wholesome family game. I remember letting out a deep sigh when I saw that because I thought I was in for a half hour of learning and listening to horrible voice acting about inane child-like problems. That impression was later blown away as you will see.

The start area is has a vast view of plants and buildings that are all made of books or pages from them. The game couldn't have been more misleading by this point and nothing could have prepared me for what we were going to be shown in the lumberjack level that they loaded next.

This cute girl started going through the world without a care, but that was short lived. It turns out that our heroine has an urge to unleash unbridled carnage on the once good lumberjacks. So you say to yourself, "Meh, it's another hack and slash game". Maybe so, but there are new features that make this game absolutely awesome.

The first being able to dynamically slice through 3D objects in real time. This basically means that if you are using a sharp weapon or push an enemy on a hazard, the killing blow on said enemy will generate a cut and subsequent flying body parts differently each time. The best example I can give of this is what we were shown. I unfortunately was not allowed to take pictures, but they essentially cut a lumberjack in half. His top half started crawling away for a few feet while leaving a blood trail. You can cut anything down to the fingers of an enemy if you hit them right. The resulting pool of blood is also splashed based off of physics and contributes to your characters ability to hold a decent footing. You will notice that a large pool of blood will cause your character to slide about. I would normally not condone such gratuitous violence, but the cartoon mayhem really resembles Itchy and Scratchy fights. I used to watch that without issue, so it is entirely possible that I have been desensitized to cartoon violence on this level. I really doubt that most gamers would be offended by it, but I can imagine parents will sing a different tune. So that is where I remind all of you parents that it is not a kids game by any means (if you didn't get that already). Playlogic is anticipating an ESRB rating of M for Mature.

That is all nice and dandy, but what is a hack and slash without multiplayer? Well luckily you won't need to find out. Fairytale Fights has drop-in, drop-out gameplay online or on a single machine (depends on which platform). The game should be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It should hit stores in Q4 2009.

This is one game that I'm really looking forward to. I can't wait to start melting people with acid, freezing and smashing them with an ice wand, or cutting them to shreds with the multi-slice special or simple killing blow.

Below you will find some screenshots and their first gameplay video that was released today.
