For the second night in a row, the Atlanta Hawks took on a Florida team in preseason action, battling the Orlando Magic in the Amway Arena. Dominating the Miami Heat on Thursday, the Hawks looked to do the same to Dwight Howard and an undefeated Magic squad and end preseason action on a five game winning streak.
But that would be a problem.
Solid shooting power forward Ryan Anderson put in the Magic's first 8 points (14 in the quarter), Orlando opened on a 13-4 run, and Atlanta looked to be completely dominated in the first.
And the Magic would continue to pour it on, coming out of the first quarter up 37-16.
It wouldn't get any better for the Hawks in the second, not managing to cut into the Magic's lead at all, and going into the half still down by 21.
Vince Carter had 19 first half points (4 for 4 from three) for Orlando, who shot an impressive 8 of 11 from deep through the first two quarters, one miss being a Brandon Bass heave to beat the halftime buzzer. Carter finished with 26 points on 9 of 10 from the field and 5 of 5 from three.
The second half was just as bad as the first for the Hawks. The Magic continuing the make shots and dominating off the boards, closing the door early and handing the Hawks an embarrassing 123 to 86 loss.
Orlando dominated the game of the bigs Friday night, outscoring the Hawks 58 to 36 in the paint and outrebounding them 46 to 32.
Dwight Howard, former AAU Atlanta Celtic teammate of Hawk's forward Josh Smith, had his way with his hometown team, dunking the ball every chance he got. Howard, who sat all of the fourth quarter, finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds on 9 of 10 from the field and 7 of 10 from the line.
Other notable Magic performers were Ryan Anderson who had 18 on 7-11 shooting (3 of 4 from three) and Brandon Bass who had 14 on 7 of 12 from the field.
For the Hawks, Jamal Crawford had 14 points, Joe Johnson had 11 and Josh Smith had 10.
Orlando finishes the preseason unbeaten at 8-0 while Atlanta falls to a respectable 5-2.
With the preseason out of the way, the Atlanta Hawks will open regular season play at home Wednesday night (10/28) against the Indiana Pacers 7:00 PM ET.
Game notes: Zaza Pachulia (sore hip) was back in action after missing the Hawks last two preseason matches. Jason Collins was not, missing his second contest in a row with an ankle injury.
