James Howell Studio is a movement and dance space in the Castro. Their mission is to make yoga accessible to the greater community, and as part of that mission, they offer donation-based yoga classes every Tuesday evening and Saturday morning.
James Howell teachers also co-lead an absolutely free yoga class the first Sunday of each month at Sports Basement in the Potrero neighborhood.
The founder of the studio, James Howell himself, started his career in dance and choreography with the Joffrey Ballet in New York City. After moving to San Francisco in the 70s, he studied physical therapy and taught movement classes in his Sanchez Street studio until he died from complications of AIDS in 1982. His legacy and mission lives on at the still-thriving James Howell studio at 66 1/2 Sanchez Street, "a place for yoga & dance, meditation & breathing."
Yogis of all calibers are welcome at the donation-based James Howell classes, regardless of experience, economic status or physical ability. In the true spirit of yogic compassion, you are invited to give what you can afford, nothing more.
