Darren Main, a longtime respected yoga teacher at Yoga Tree and author of several spiritual books, including Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic, leads a donation-based yoga class on the labyrinth inside Grace Cathedral every Tuesday evening at 6:15p.m.
The setting is reverent, the atmosphere is one of sanctuary, and Darren not only invites but encourages people of all shapes, sizes, levels of yoga experience, and faiths to attend. The only requirements are that you show up with a warm, comfortable outfit (sweats are appropriate) and an open-hearted attitude.
Darren's class is on the gentle side (as opposed to many of the more calisthenic yoga asana classes popular in San Francisco these days) and so it's a great opportunity for those who may be shy about trying yoga to simply show up without pressure. Those with physical limitations are encouraged to attend and to speak privately with the instructor prior to the class. And, or course, dedicated yogis are welcome to come experience their practice in the prayerful atmosphere of one of this city's most revered spiritual spaces.
As an added treat, Darren brings in Sam Jackson to play crystal bowls once a month, and alternates that with a live appearance by Mirabai and Timothy Dixon, who chant and play live music. (Read more about the live music element of Yoga on the Labyrinth.)
