This year Green Festival celebrates its 7th year, with a line up of 150 visionary speakers, over 400 green businesses and various non-profits, sponsored by Global Exchange and Green America (formally Co-op America). These two veteran non-profits have joined forces to kick-off the three day event starting this Friday with compelling lectures, coupled with interactive workshops, music, and community-based events. As one of the core principals of this event, it intends on educating the public on the range of businesses and causes that constitutes the vast environmental movement and green (eco)nomy.
This three day celebration, starting November 13 - 15, 2009, brings together the sustainability community at large, while demonstrating by example how to live green. By taking public transit and/or using alternative modes of transportation, visitors are given $5 off Green Festival admission, while providing free secure bike valet (for discount bring Muni ticket or valet ticket).
In continuing their effort to make this event as low impact as possible and educate the public about waste, they have diligently created refuse stations, where volunteers gladly compost or recycle all waste while discarding what cannot be diverted. Last year, they collected an impressive 48,745 lbs of waste with only 2% going to the landfills. Green Fest is setting the stage for other events to follow suit with their zero-waste goal. On their website they give attendees a list of suggestions to help make the event a bit more green - excellent tips to incorporate in your daily life and reduce your waste production.
Here are a few green tips:
