Rory Reid, candidate for Governor in Nevada

Whether you are a fan of Rory Reid or not, all Nevadans should be thankful to him for publishing The Virtual Crossroads - Rory Reid's Vision for the Future of Nevada.

Reid's document shows that he is a serious contender for office whose campaign is not designed to insult Nevadans intelligence by relying solely on electoral demographics, name recognition, a powerful father, or an ability to raise money. Such a campaign might have ended up working for Mr. Reid, but it is refreshing to see that he isn't going down that path.

Presently, polls show that Mr. Reid is by no means the front runner in the race for Governor, and his present strategy of getting out in front of the issues may be a calculated necessity. Perhaps if he were the early leader in the race, things might be different. No matter. By publishing his document, he has now raised the bar for other candidates, putting them on the defensive to demonstrate a mastery of the issues that he has already staked a claim to. They will have to propose better ideas, challenge Reid's ideas on the merits, and define their own candidacies with ideas outside of Reid's vision.

Having raised the level of honest debate in the gubernatorial contest, the scramble should now be on among those vying for Rory Reid's father's senate seat. So far, most of the republican candidates have failed to differentiate themselves on the serious issues or provide enough substance to divert the local media's focus from ridicule. Fore example, most readers of the Las Vegas Sun are reminded that columnist Jon Ralston likes calling Sue Lowden Snow White, that Danny Tarkanian's father was a great basketball coach, and that Sharron Angle had an issue with property taxes.

Want to make a few bucks down at the local tavern or in the stands at your child's soccer or little league game? Bet anyone that they can't guess how many declared candidates there are for Harry Reid's Senate seat. (There are eleven count-em eleven!). If you want to take the rest of their money, follow up with a bet that they can't name a defining issue for any of the front runners.

There will be plenty of time to study Rory Reid's document to determine if his vision is 20/20 or if he is better suited, not as a candidate for the Governor's office, but rather for Lasik surgery. In the meantime, thank you Rory.
