A new study from Germany has confirmed what experts have long suspected - that breastfeeding can be a powerful tool in the fight against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.

The study looked at over 1000 babies, some of whom died of SIDS and a 'control' group that did not.

According to the study, at 1 week of age, 83% of the babies who did not die from SIDS were being breastfed, compared to 50% of the babies who died from SIDS.

At 1 month of age, 72% of the infants who did not die of SIDS were breastfed, compared to 40% of the babies who died from SIDS.

In addition, the study found that babies who were breastfed exclusively at 1 month of age had a reduced risk of SIDS by half. There seemed to be a reduced risk for babies who were partially breastfed as well.
