A woman has suffered amnesia after having sex with her husband.
This story about transient global amnesia seems to have half the newsrooms of the world giggling like schoolboys as they compose their stories. One gives us a headline of "mindblowing sex" which is at least factually accurate as well as a good little pun.
The basic story is that the 59 year old, known publicly only as Alice, has sex with her husband Scott last August. As a result she lost her memory (no, no, stop that sniggering at the back there, this is serious, not some smutty story about how long married women try to forget the sex they have with their husband) and could not remember anything about the previous few years.
After thinking that she had had a stroke doctors were able to diagnose transient global amnesia. The essential mechanism is that the vaso-restrictions which accompany sex (and more importantly orgasm) can cause such memory loss. The memory does come back but perhaps not in its entirety:
Although her memory has otherwise returned fully, Alice remains unable to remember the act of intercourse that triggered her attack. However, it is likely that she enjoyed herself. Dr Caplan said: "It usually is after climax that [TGA] develops."
Other outlets have approached this story of transient global amnesia (no, look, stop laughing, this isn't funny, this is a real disease suffered by real people!) in similar wasy, muffled sniggers shining through the writing. One noted that the husband seemed to be watching television before his wife realised she had forgotten anything but the winner in hte headline stakes probably has to be Britain's Daily Mail:
