Although the result was along the line of what most expected out of this fight, with Fedor Emelianenko (32-1) ending matters with a picture perfect right hand to the jaw of heavy underdog Brett Rogers (10-1) in the second round, the fight did not quite go according to script in its entirety.

Taking place in Brett Rogers’ hometown of Chicago, IL, at a sold-out Sears Center, the bigger, stronger Chicagoan came out strong in the first round, likely breaking Fedor’s nose with a hard left jab inside of the first minute. Not only was the nose apparently broken, but a severe cut was also opened on its bridge with the same punch.

With blood flowing heavily down Fedor’s face, the Russian fought through the adversity by taking Rogers to the ground a couple of times in the first frame but was unable to capitalize, as the upstart showed a capable ground game that was a surprise to many in attendance and watching the match on CBS.

Brett Rogers even managed to mount Fedor Emelianenko for a brief moment and reign down several hard power punches to the top heavyweight’s face before he could escape. The first round ended with Fedor maintaining an advantageous position on the ground, but the frame likely went to Rogers on the scorecards.

The second round can only be described as explosive and decisive. Known for his accurate punching, Fedor did not disappoint, landing a devastating, straight right hand that left the big man crumbled on the ground. Emelianenko quickly jumped on top of Rogers and landed another couple of hard shots before the referee “Big” John McCarthy had seen enough. One may be able to argue the stoppage was a bit quick, but it would have been extremely difficult to have seen Rogers recovering from that shot with possibly the best MMA fighter in the world all over him.

Fedor Emelianenko deserves a great deal of credit for traveling to Brett Rogers’ hometown to stare down the challenge, and let’s give Brett Rogers credit for turning in a very good performance on a national stage. During post fight comments, both men seemed ready and willing to face each other again, and why not? It was a very entertaining fight that featured hard punching, good grappling, lots of blood and a dramatic knockout.
