Joel Clough was born Nov. 24, 1804 in Unity, NH - and at the age of 28, was executed July 26, 1833, for the murder of Mary W. Hamilton, the widowed daughter of his Bordentown, NJ, landlord.

Twice he asked Mary for her hand in marriage and twice she turned him down. He threatened suicide. And a short time later, he worked out a plan and carried it out - to stab the young woman to death.

His defense attorney unsuccessfully argued that he was insane.

There was not much time between Joel's conviction and his hanging, but he did take time to write a short book about his life and the circumstances relating to why he murdered this woman - The only true and authentic life and confession of Joel Clough, containing his life and confession, from 14 years of age, anecdotes, letters, escape, capture.
