This week, the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) announced the nominations for the 2009 World Athlete of the Year. Polling (voting) for nominations began after the World Half Marathon Championships on October 19th, lasted about three weeks and consisted of input from IAAF Council Members; IAAF Member Federations; IAAF Directors, Ambassadors , Staff, Athletes and members of the International Press.
The winners of the 2009 World Athlete of the Year Awards will be announced live, on stage, during the 2009 World Athletics Gala, which will take place in Monaco on November 22nd, 2009.
Presented alphabetically, the 2009 Athlete of the Year Finalists (and their events) are:
Kenenisa Bekele, Ethiopia: 5,000m and 10,000m
Usain Bolt, Jamaica: 100m and 200m
Tyson Gay, USA: 100m and 200m
Steven Hooker, Australia: Pole Vault
Andreas Thorkildsen, Norway: Javelin
Yelena Isinbayeva, Russia: Pole Vault
Sanya Richards, USA: 400m
Valerie Vili, New Zealand: Shot Put
Blanka Vlasic, Croatia: High-Jump
Anita Wlodarczyk, Poland: Hammer Throw
