With their forward line depleted by injuries, the Wild traded for Boston Bruins’ winger Chuck Kobasew on Sunday. Minnesota sent a 2011 2nd round draft pick along with forward Craig Weller and prospect Alexander Fallstrom to Boston.
Kobasew is coming off of back to back 20-goal seasons, and set a career high with 42 points a season ago. He had been held to just one assist and zero goals in Boston’s first seven games this season.
Weller played in 36 games for the Wild last season, tallying one goal and two assists. He failed to make the team out of training camp this year and had been assigned to Minnesota’s AHL affiliate in Houston prior to the deal. Fallstrom, the Wild’s fourth round pick (116th overall) in last June’s entry draft, is a freshman at Harvard after spending two years at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault.
Kobasew was a college star at Boston College, where he was named the MVP of the 2001 Frozen Four as he helped the Eagles defeat North Dakota for the national championship. He was drafted 14th overall by Calgary in 2001 and spent parts of four different seasons with the Flames. He was traded to Boston in February of 2007. The 27-year old has 78 goals and 76 assists in 361 career games. Kobasew has also appeared in 44 playoff games, including the 2003 Stanley Cup finals with Calgary. He has 4 career playoff goals.
The Wild have been in desperate need of any kind of scoring punch up front, with top six forwards Martin Havlat (groin), Petr Sykora (groin) and Pierre-Marc Bouchard (head) sidelined by injuries. Minnesota’s next game is Wednesday vs. Colorado at the Xcel Energy Center. Kobasew is expected to be in the lineup.
