Ida has become the 3rd hurricane of the 2009 season. Hurricane Ida has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.  SEE SLIDE SHOW

The estimated central pressure is 985mb. Ida is hugging the coast of Nicaragua, moving towards the northwest at 7 mph.

At 7:00 a.m. EST the center of Tropical Storm Ida is located 12.8 north and 83.4 west about 60 miles north-northeast of Bluefeilds Nicaragua or about 85 miles south of Puerto Cabezas Nicaragua.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the eastern coast of Nicaragua from Bluefeilds north to the Puerto Cabezo. Also a hurricane watch is in effect for the eastern coast of Nicaragua Puerto Cabezo north to the Nicaragua/Honduras border. Once inland Ida is expected to turn towards the north-northwest and slowly make her way along the eastern portions of Nicaragua and Honduras over the next 48 hours.

Ida is expected to weaken and could even weaken to a remnant low as she makes her track inland, however the official forecast from the NHC has Ida emerging into the northwest Caribbean Sea as a tropical depression moving due north in about 2 days. After 24 hours over the warm Caribbean waters Ida is expected to regain some strength.

The model consensus is in god agreement with Ida moving into the northwest Caribbean Sea in 48 hours but diverges in direction, forward speed and intensity after 72 hours. The official forecast has shifted slightly to the west at the end of 3 days. The overall impact of this system will be the heavy rainfall over the eastern portions of Nicaragua and Honduras.

They can except rain totals to be greater than 25 inches. Life threatening flash floods and mud slides are likely. It is wait and see for the residents along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, as to the direction and what is left of Ida when she emerges back into the water.

At this time review your hurricane plan and make sure it is updated. We will continue tropical updates under the Daily forecast article once Ida is inland. We will resume a dedicated article on the tropics if and when Ida is back over water.  SEE SLIDE SHOW
