Tropical Depression Ida made landfall this morning as a Tropical Storm on Dauphin Island Alabama with winds of 45 mph. Ida is now located in Mobile bay about 50 miles east- southeast of Mobile Alabama and 40 miles west-northwest of Pensacola Florida. The center of Ida was found at 30.6 north 87.6 west. Tropical Depression Ida made a 2nd landfall around 7 am CST just to the northwest of Bon Secour Alabama. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) now says Ida has become extra tropical. Ida is embedded in a surface front that is making its way off to the east. Ida’s projected path takes her remnants to the east of Tallahassee Florida on Wednesday. From there the cold front should move north and east into the mid Atlantic states. Reports show very little property damage and few power outages. However this storm has and is causing major beach erosion along the north gulf coast and indirectly causing beach erosion along the central Florida beaches. The central Florida area should see minimal effects from Ida however some areas could see up to 2 inches of rain. Expect windy and potentially stormy conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday. SEE CENTRAL FLORIDA FORECAST

This is the final Tropical Update on Ida unless conditions warrant it.

SEE SLIDE SHOW

Our attention is now focused back out over the Atlantic ocean several hundred miles north- northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands on a system of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The NHC has given this area a designation of INVEST 98L. According to current satellite imagery this system is not looking very good and appears to be even more disorganized than it did a few hours ago. Invest 98L has a lot to get through to become a tropical cyclone. Shear and dry air are in its path. However waters temps are still high enough to support a tropical cyclone and the Ocean Heat Content (OHC) also favors the development of a tropical cyclone. The NHC gives this area a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone  less than 30% SEE SLIDE SHOW

From the NHC:

. DISORGANIZED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS LOCATED SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES
NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH
A TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE. THE PRESSURE GRADIENT BETWEEN THE TROUGH
AND AN AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE TO ITS NORTH IS PRODUCING AN AREA OF
WINDS TO NEAR GALE FORCE. ANY DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM WILL
LIKELY BE SLOW TO OCCUR AS IT MOVES GENERALLY WEST-NORTHWESTWARD AT
10 TO 15 MPH OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.  THERE IS A LOW
CHANCE...LESS THAN 30 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL
CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS
SYSTEM CAN BE FOUND IN HIGH SEAS FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE...UNDER AWIPS HEADER NFDHSFAT1 AND WMO HEADER
FZNT01 KWBC.
