The 2009 Arizona Fall League got started yesterday afternoon with all six teams in action. Fisher Cats' manager Gary Cathcart's Phoenix Desert Dogs suffered a 10-6 loss against the Mesa Solar Sox. The only Blue Jays' prospect to play in the game was Adam Loewen.
In four trips to the plate Loewen worked three walks and struck out once. He also came around to score two runs and was caught trying to steal in the bottom of the third inning. Loewen saw a total of 20 pitches in 4 plate appearances.
The Desert Dogs are going against the Solar Sox again tonight with former Fisher Cat Robert Ray slated to get the start on the mound. David Cooper, as mentioned here, is a member of the Mesa Solar Sox and is a "taxi squad" player. Taxi squad players are only activated for their team's games on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Hard to tell this early on how much playing time Cooper will get on those days so hopefully he gets in at least a couple at-bats tonight.
One last bit of news regarding the Blue Jays' contingent, nineteen year old catcher AJ Jimenez has been added to the Desert Dogs roster to replace the injured Brian Jeroloman. Jimenez was a ninth round draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2008 who spent all of 2009 with Lansing in Low-A ball. He has struggled at the plate so far in his pro career and it remains to be seen how much playing time he will get for the Desert Dogs. We'll keep you up to date on his progress along with the rest of the Blue Jays in Arizona. Check back tomorrow for a recap of today's action and a look at Robert Ray's first start.
