Girl Scout Troop 499 started their Girl Scout year with a worthy project. After seeing a newspaper article about the Orange and Villa Park Rotary Clubs collecting DVD's to send to the troops in Afghanistan, they decided to help the effort. Some of the girls brought DVD's from home. Flyers and posters were made so they could collect from family, friends, neighbors and anyone that would help. After all was collected the girls had more than 400 DVD's to donate. A few children's movies got into the pile and they will go to Olive Crest. A special thanks goes to the parents at Nohl Canyon Elementary where the largest amount of donations came from. Thank you to everyone that helped.

At the Nohl Canyon School Carnival on 9/11/09 they had a patriotic theme, so Troop 499 asked everyone to write a thank you note to the soldiers. The troop wrote letters too. The GATE kids at Nohl Canyon wrote some also. These wonderful letters were included with the DVD delivery. Writing letters to the troops is something every troop can do on a regular basis, not just at the holidays. Our soldiers really need to know they are being remembered and appreciated. A nice letter, photos or drawings are all treasured by these brave military personnel who are so far from home.

Our DVDs collected went to Operation a Bit of Home.

While we are talking about the troops, there are a lot of other things you could do to help if you want to. There is always a shortage of the things they need the most. The government does not supply to the troops any of the things we use daily for comfort or enjoyment. Don't forget the nuts from the fall product sale and Girl Scout cookies are well loved too. Just don't send the ones that melt!

Please help our girls and guys overseas. Here are a few websites where you can get wish lists and ideas and start your own troop collection project.
