The top five men's players in the world were all scheduled to play singles matches on Wednesday in Paris, and No. 3 Novak Djokovic and U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro were the first two to complete and win their matches.

Wednesday's competition also featured Marat Safin's final tour match, assuming he goes ahead with his planned retirement.

Djokovic, playing his first match since beating Roger Federer in the finals of the Swiss Indoors on Sunday, was a bit sluggish and had to rally from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to beat Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5 in the PNB Paribas Masters tennis tournament. Djokovic said afteward the long week in Basel, Switzerland, may have affected him physically, but he was just happpy to advance.

Del Potro struggled more than Djokovic in only his third match since beating Federer in the finals of the U.S. Open.    Currently ranked No. 5 in the world, del Potro got past Marat Safin 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 ikn the second round to get his first match victory since winning the U.S. Open.

It was del Potro's his first tournament competition since retiring with a wrist injury in his Oct. 14 match against Jurden Melzer in China.   The previous week in Japan, del Potro lost in straight sets  to Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who was ranked 189th at the time, in del Potro's only other match since the U.S. Open.

Safin, a onetime No. 1 player, had said he will retire from the tour after this tournament, so presumably this was a farewell match for Safin.

Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray were scheduled to play later Wednesday.
