Serena Williams beat her sister for the second time in the same tournament on Sunday, but it was the second one that mattered most, a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory in the finals of the season-ending WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Serena had beaten her older sister in the round-robin portion of the tournament, then beat her again in Sunday's finals to finish the eight-player event undefeated.
Serena had already assured herself of finishing the year ranked No. 1 when Dinara Safina dropped out of the tournament during the round-robin portion. Serena Williams, 28, began the week ranked No. 2 behind Safina but will will finish a year ranked No. 1 for just the second time in her career. The only other year in which she wound up No. 1 was 2002.
Serena earned $1.55 million for the victory, which was her third tournament win of the year but her first in a non-Grand Slam event.
