Denise Dy of the University of Washington completed her unlikely road to the title of the ITA Northwest Regional tennis championships by beating another seeded player in the finals at Stanford on Monday.
Dy, who was seeded No. 9 in the event, attended Laurel Springs High School in San Jose, so perhaps she felt comfortable in the Bay Area.
She won her quarterfinal match over No. 2 seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford in three sets, and in Monday's finals, Dy knocked off No. 2 seeded Jana Juriocova of Cal rather convincingly 6-3, 6-3.
The Stanford duo of Lindsay Burdette and Barte won the doubles title by beating Cal's Juricova and Mari Andersson 8-3. Dy got to the semifinals of the doubles too before losing.
