Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic moved a step closer to an intriguing matchup in the finals by winning quarterfinal matches on Friday in the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament.
Nadal, the top seed, was the beneficiary of an injury as Ivan Ljubicic became the fourth player in this week's event to retire in the middle of a match because of injury. The unseeded Ljubicic was giving Nadal a challenge, having won the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 6-3. At that point, Ljubicic forfeited the match because of a left hip injury.
That put Nadal into Saturday's semifinals against unseeded Feliciano Lopez, who is ranked No. 41 in the world and upset ninth-seeded Robin Soderling 7-6, 6-3.
In the other semifinal, No. 2 seed Djokovic advanced, but he too had to work hard before getting past Gilles Simon, the world's No. 10-ranked player, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Djokovic has been one of the most consistent players in the world lately, and is into the semifinals in his fourth straight tournament. His semifinal opponent in Shanghai will be Nikolay Davydenko, who is No. 8 in the world and got past Radek Stepanek 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
