Andy Roddick has dropped to No. 6 in the world and was eliminated in his opening match for the second straight tournament, but a more immediate issue may be his knee.
Roddick, seeded No. 4 in this week's Shanghai Masters 1000 tournament, was leading Stanislas Wawrinka 4-3 in the first set of his match on Tuesday when he felt pain in his left knee.
He was forced to retire from the match at that point and will return to the United States for further evaluation of his knee injury.
Roddick said afterward that the pain behind his knee was considerable but that he really had no idea what the problem was or how significant the injury is. He is not scheduled to play another tournament for three weeks.
In the best match of the day, Tomas Berdych beat No. 12 seed Marin Cilic, who has been playing well lately, by a score of 7-6(8), 3-6, 6-4. Berdych will now play Marat Safin, who has announced he will retire at the end of the season.
Rafael Nadal is the top seed in this event, which features 17 of the top 20 players in the world, and he will play his first match of the tournament on Wednesday against James Blake.
