Players who are not participating were the main story on Monday's opening day of the $50,000 USTA Challenger men's tennis tournament at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.
Robert Kendrick and Wayne Odesnik, who were scheduled to be the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, as well as Taylor Dent, the most recognizable name on the tournament's entry list, all withdrew from the tournament over the weekend.
The tournament lost its No. 6 seed, Donald Young, in the first round on Monday when Young lost to Ilija Bozoljac 6-4, 7-6(3).
The top seed now is Michael Russell, who is ranked No. 91 in the world and is the only top-100 player in the event.
One player with a recognizable name did advance to the second round -- Alex Kuznetsov, who beat Prakash Amritraj, 7-6, 7-6. However, Kuznetsov is not related to women's tennis star Svetlana Kuznetsova. Kuznetsov moved to the United States when he was 3 and is one of the young American players with the potential to become a standout player on the tour.
Amritraj is the son of Vijay Amritraj, who got to the quarterfinals of four Grand Slam singles events.
