Rain may have been Novak Djokovic's best friend in Sunday's finals of the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing.
Marin Cilic was coming off a dominating semifinal victory over Rafael Nadal and seemed to have the upper hand early in the finals against Djokovic. Cilic had five break-point opportunities in Djokovic's first three service games, but with the score at 2-2 and deuce on Djokovic's serve, rain uspended play.
Djokovic benefited from the delay and won four straight games after the break to win the first set.
Cilic twice served for the second set but could not put the hammer down, and eventually lost in a tiebreaker to give Djokovic a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory. Djokovic, who will supplant Andy Murray for the No. 3 spot in the rankings on Monday, earned $500,000 for the victory.
In Tokyo, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga played some of the best tennis of his career in the semifinals and finals of the Japan Open, finishing it off with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over unseeded Mikhail Youzhny in the finals on Sunday that took just 69 minutes.
Youzhny, the No. 49 ranked player, had defeated three seeds to get to the finals, but was no match for Tsonga, who had dominated Gael Monfils in the semifinals and did likelwise to Youzhny to earn the $300,000 first prize.
