John Garamendi, elected Tuesday to California's 10th Congressional District in a special election, and leaving as the State’s Lieutenant Governor, joins other high profile endorsers of Democrat Susan Jordan for State Assembly District 35. Garamendi has extensive experience in government. From the State Assembly starting in 1974, to election in 1990 as Insurance Commissioner, then with an appointment as US Deputy Secretary of the Interior in 1995, back to Insurance Commissioner, and more, he can claim to be one of the more experienced politicians in State history.

In his endorsement Garamendi said, “I support Susan Jordan for State Assembly because she is smart, bold and she has proven that she’s not afraid to disagree with those in power. The people of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties can count on Susan to stand up for the environment, better health care, and quality schools. She’s on the side of the people.”

Jordan remarked, “I first worked with John against new federal offshore oil drilling off the California coast back in the 1990's, when he was President Clinton's second in command at the Department of Interior. John is a true fighter for our environment and our state and I am deeply honored to have his endorsement."

In 2007 Jordan led a fight to stop the approval of the first Liquefied Natural Gas terminal off the Central Coast, the then Lieutenant Governor Garamendi, acting as Chair of the State Lands Commission, provided the critical "no vote" stopping the widely opposed project. Jordan in praise of Garamendi’s continuing work said, “In 2009, when I refused to support the first new offshore oil lease in State waters in 40 years, John voted against the proposal by Plains Exploration and Production saying that a ‘secret sweetheart deal’ for an oil company that was unenforceable was a 'bad deal' for the State of California.”

Recent endorsements demonstrate Jordan's broad support base. They include, Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs' Association, the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, the National Women’s Political Caucus, and several unions (CWA, UFCW, Longshore Workers, Allied Trades). Of note are some well known elected officials including, State Senators Dean Florez and Mark Leno, as well as Assemblymembers Anna Caballero, Hector De La Torre, and Fiona Ma.
