If you were a doubter of Fedor Emelianenko before tonight, where do you stand now? In what turned out to be a very exciting fight, Fedor flattened the huge Brett Rogers with a thunderous right hand to put a halt to Rogers’ evening. During the round and a half things lasted, Fedor proved a few things to the fans that hadn’t before seen him.

Rogers got things started with a straight jab that seemed to inflict all sorts of damage to Fedor. It appeared that the blow both cut the bridge of his nose, as well as breaking it as well. Within forty-five seconds, the best heavyweight in the world looked like he had run face first into a brick wall.

As the action continued, the size advantage enjoyed by Rogers became much more apparent. Rogers landed a few shots, and when Fedor went for the clinch, and then the takedown, the strength of Rogers showed as well. Fedor took him to the ground, but Rogers just seemed too big and too strong for Fedor to do anything with him.

Before the fight, the popular opinion was that Fedor would want no part of Rogers’ power standing, and that he would break Rogers in half once he got him on the ground. However, the end of the first round proved otherwise. It was Rogers that gained a clear advantage on the ground, landing some heavy shots to inflict further damage to Fedor. As the first round ended, it appeared that Fedor was having trouble regardless of where the fight was happening

When the second round began, their seemed to be two big questions looming; Did Rogers really have chance, and did Rogers have any energy left? The answer to the first was yes, Rogers indeed did have a chance…a good chance. He had made a fight of things, actually took the fight to Fedor in the first round. The answer to the second was probably not much. Rogers was tired, putting his hands on his sides at one point.

After Rogers landed some early knees against the cage, the fighters split up, Rogers appearing to try to catch his breath. As they stepped towards the center of the ring to engage, Fedor hit Rogers with a right that looked like it was delivered with a sledgehammer. Fedor put every muscle in his body into that punch, and connected absolutely flush. It was amazing Rogers wasn’t unconscious, as well as amazing Fedor was able to land it. It looked like he climbed a stepladder to get up to Rogers’ chin. Truly a huge knockout punch, not the way most expected things to end.

Fedor proved he can take a punch. He proved he can fight out of trouble. He also proved he has an explosive right hand, capable of felling a man fifty pounds heavier than him with a single blow.

To say the fact he did it against a guy that was changing tires six months ago doesn’t prove anything is a giant discredit to Brett Rogers. The guy came to fight, and put on a solid performance. Rogers proved not that Fedor still hasn’t beaten anyone good lately, but that he himself is a guy who should be considered one of the top in the heavyweight division. The only problem for Rogers Saturday night was he was fighting the best heavyweight in the world; therefore to be even second best in the world just wouldn’t be good enough.

Fedor Saturday night showed why so many consider him the best in the history of the heavyweight division.
