"For as this appalling ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy, but encompassed by all the horrors of the half known life." (Herman Melville, Moby Dick, Ch. 58)
What is the "insular Tahiti" that Melville wrote about? It's the kernel of truth we hold inside that tells us we are here for a reason and that we are not alone. We all come from the same Source Energy that created everything; we are intimately connected to everyone and everything on this planet. Just bringing that idea into conscious thought can change how we live our lives and how we interact with each other.
Notice in the Melville quote that he also talks about the "horrors of the half known life." We humans tend to think that only those things perceived by our five senses are "real" or "important"... but deep down we know that there is more to life than the mundane half-life we're living. There's got to be! Otherwise why are we here? It wouldn't make sense to be put on Earth just to close our minds to all possibilities.
It is by connecting with our own internal truth, our "Insular Tahiti," that we come to have faith that a much more glorious existence is possible. Did I just use the word "glorious?" Yes. It IS possible to live a joyful, loving life, connected to others, reveling in all that Mother Earth has to offer.
Yes, it IS possible to swim through the mucky ordinariness and reach that Insular Tahiti within, that part of us that is filled with peace and joy. All it takes is a conscious choice to commit to our internal truth and to follow Divine Guidance in crafting the life we dream of.
