Experiences With My CSA

My latest CSA box
This is the fourth week of my CSA membership and so far I have to say, I'm quite pleased with the service. This week I received the following.

  1. 3/4 pound of sugar snap peas
  2. 3/4 pound of snow peas
  3. 3 red onions
  4. 3 Walla Walla sweet onions
  5. 3/4 pound pattypan squash
  6. 1 bunch of medium carrots
  7. 1 very large head of red butter lettuce
  8. 1/2 pound of arugula
  9. 4 ounces of pea vines
  10. 1 bunch of beets
  11. 1 bunch of turnips

This half share cost me $29 (back in February). When I went to the market this past weekend, I priced each of the items I received individually, so see if I was actually saving money. I've listed the individual purchase prices for the amounts of vegetables I received in the table to the right.

Farmers Market Individual Veggie Pricing
VegetableTotal Cost
Sugar Snap Peas$3.75
Snow Peas$3.75
3 red onions$3.00
3 Walla Walla onions$3.00
Pattypan Squash$3.00
Carrots$4.00
Red Butter Lettuce$3.00
Arugula$3.00
Pea Vines$3.00
Beets$3.00
Turnips$3.00

The total for purchasing separately would have been $35.50. That's a pretty good return on my investment. I have been very pleased with the quality of my produce. The red butter lettuce is amazing this week. However, I have had a few missteps. The first week, I ordered a bag of mixed salad greens. Those didn't travel very well and only lasted about two days. I sent the feedback to the farmers and their solution was that if I ordered mixed salad greens again, they wouldn't bag it until I picked up the box. Problem solved. The second problem occured with strawberries. I ordered two pints of strawberries two weeks ago and it was so warm that the strawberries were practically soup by the time I got home. However, the extra pint I picked up from another farm stand that same day also turned into soup by the time I got home. So while that wasn't a "win", it was pretty much a "push".

The size of the half share is nearly perfect for two hearty eaters who enjoy vegetables. We've tossed a handful of peas here and there or maybe a single onion that rolled to the back of the vegetable drawer, but other than that, the amount of food is spot on for us.

I love the online ordering system. I can sit on my couch and look through the weekly offerings surrounded by my recipe books. So when I post the recipe list for you on Friday, I already know which of my vegetables I'll be using and how much of each vegetable I'll have.

Overall, I am very pleased with the quality and consistency of my CSA half share. I will definitely participate in the same CSA next year as well.
