The Brazoria County Fair and Rodeo has been the highlight of the Fall Season for Brazoria, Galveston and Harris County residents and country music fans for as long as I can remember. This year, the 2009 Brazoria County Fair entertainment features two of the most beloved Texas performers around: Kevin Fowler (opening by the Kyle Park Band) and the Hill Country Music of Cross-Canadian Ragweed among others.

Located at the Brazoria County Fairgrounds at 901 South Downing Road in Angleton, the BCFR event runs from October 9th through October 17, 2009, and features rodeo, cook-offs, livestock judging, beautiful rodeo queen contenders, vendors, exhibits and all the trappings of one of the best county fairs around. In 2008, the Brazoria County Fair http://www.bcfa.org/ provided just under $50,000 in scholarships to the youth of the Brazoria County area.  The Fair Association has touched the lives of many others through auctions, livestock, horse, and art competitions.

Focusing on the most imminent ‘oh,-I’ve-GOT-to-be-there’ performance is the open air concert on October 9, presented by Budweiser Texas Live and featuring Kevin Fowler. His new CD Bring It On, delivers 100% Texan country with a solid presence of rock! And the newest gem to the song list, is Kevin’s new song and radio single “Beer Season – Their ain’t no limit and it’s open all year!” shows Kevin’s dedication to making us laugh at ourselves by is as important as his pure but unique Texas county rock beat. Kevin knows his fans, and their families, as one of the tracks in ‘Bring It On’, called a ‘Long Line of Losers’, he reflects on the relative at that family reunion that gets pretty boozed up. And don’t we all have one of those! What fun to know someone knows our families? And if you claim there’s not one in your family, you’re not looking hard enough, or they couldn’t make it because their otherwise imbibed.

And not only does Kevin know his fans, but his fans know him just as well – and they know every word to his honky-tonk anthems like ‘Beer, Bait, and Ammo, The Lord Loves a Drinking Man and Loose, Loud and Crazy’.  Kevin’s a visionary, been called the ‘hybrid of Southern Rock and Country music.’ Just the mention of his name announced on the stage of any county fair, arena or dance hall brings a full house and “rockin’, cheering, and dancin’” fans.

Kevin’s bio gives us the clue to his distinctive style: ‘A native of Amarillo who grew up listening to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, Kevin rounded out his musical education in Los Angeles attending the Guitar Institute of Technology, and then returned to Texas to join the award-winning hard rock band Dangerous Toys. He dabbled with his own Southern rock band, Thunderfoot, in the late '90s before turning his full attention to his own vision of music.

That vision and Kevin Fowler’s love for blending the sounds of rock and country music, has places him solidly  in a unique class of country rock entertainers, and the new generation of country fans love it!  For Kevin, it’s an awareness of his audience, staying true to his own brand of music that is the key to a career of phenomenal success. Kevin’s fans instinctively recognize the perfect mix of the music they were raised with – MTV, as well as CMT.  And Kevin revels in his and his fans’ taste for rock 'n' roll and country music. As Kevin Fowler explains on his bio, ‘Our fans listen to us, to AC/DC and to Buckcherry. They want to hear what we want to play. They're a very open-minded audience. We can mix it all together, and they like it. I have Merle and Metallica next to each other on my iPod.”  Be pleasantly prepared for a real treat, as Kevin Fowler’s live shows define a big rock 'n' roll show with atmospheric smoke, bright colored lights and elaborate staging.

When discussing ‘Bring It On’, Kevin Fowler says, ‘I wanted this record to resemble and sound like the live show. There are a lot of songs on Bring It On that I wouldn't have cut before. They're too rock, and I didn't want to freak anyone out. But one thing I've learned about our fans is that they don't want a traditional record out of me. I can throw some screaming guitar in and crank the drums up. I can be more adventurous.’ And the best CD roller coaster ride begins with Bring It On’: Party like a rock star with ‘Feels Good Don’t It’, then around the curve with ‘I Pulled a Hank Last Night’ with the shades of old school honky-tonk country rock.

Kevin Fowler does not hide his admiration for his legendary heroes, and a previous duet with Willie Nelson, and singing with George Jones on Me and the Boys sure gives it away. ‘We sent George the lyrics’ says Kevin, ‘and in a week we were in Nashville cutting it!’ What a life-changing and thrilling experience for Kevin Fowler. In listening to ‘Bring It On’ CD and his new single “Beer Season”, the country rebel with a heart of rock emerges. Don’t wait; the tickets go fast for Kevin around here. It’s a performance MTV and CMT mavericks like this reviewer, won’t miss!

The entertainment event is the jewel of the Brazoria County event, seeing such stars as Shake Russell, Freddie Fender and so many more throughout the years. It’s always been a tradition for those of us growing up in the boondocks and the expansive rice field country of Brazoria County. Even the schools closed to allow kids to be there for the Brazoria County Fair Rodeo Parade.  Great memories.
