It's okay for people to set off their own "Safe and Sane" fireworks in the following 32 cities of Los Angeles County:
Alhambra, Artesia, Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bell, Bellflower, Bell Gardens, Carson, Commerce, Compton, Cudahy, Downey, Duarte, Gardena, El Monte, Hawaiian Gardens, Hawthorne, Huntington Park, Industry, Inglewood, Irwindale, La Mirada, La Puente, Lakewood, Lawndale, Lynwood, Maywood, Montebello, Monterey Park, Norwalk, Palmdale, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Rosemead, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, South Gate and Temple City (Fire.lacounty.gov).
However, the Los Angeles County Fire Department encourages residents and visitors to attend professionally promoted fireworks shows - visit SafeJuly4th.org for a list of 2009 events - because of common dangers. There were 9,200 visits to the E.R. for fireworks-related injuries in 2006, reported the American Pyrotechnics Association. According to SafeJuly4th.org, "...bottle rockets can fly into peoples' faces and cause eye injuries; sparklers can ignite clothing (sparklers burn at more than 1,000°F); and firecrackers can injure the hands or face if they explode at close range. Injuries may result from being too close to fireworks when they explode."
What's "Safe and Sane"?
Fireworks that are deemed "Safe and Sane" by the California State Fire Marshal are marked with a seal that has the words, "Safe and Sane Registered Fireworks." They are only sold between noon on June 28 and noon on July 6. Examples of illegal fireworks are sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, cherry bombs, firecrackers and palomitas.
