Albrecht Dürer’s Melancolia I

Welcome back to reality chickadees, only a few more weeks left and you’re done for a few months. If you went abroad, congratulations on not getting tricked into drug trafficking or prostitution. Yours truly learned that lesson the hard way. If you went home, congratulations on not going insane. If you stayed in New York, congratulations.

But this article is not about drugs or going insane. I’m saving that for my book. This one happens to be about a hidden little gem of a club at NYU.

Did you know we have a Fine Arts Society? Cause we do. I’ll give you three guesses what they do and how much they do it for.

 A: A lot, cheap.

Did you win? With such words as ‘fine arts’ and ‘society’ in the title, I don’t think you did. Or maybe, just maybe you know me well enough by now to figure out that I only write about things to do which involve as little as possible of my money leaving me.

All you have to do is sign up on NYUHome’s listserv page and wam bam thank you ma’am, they send you e-mails about artsy yet frugal events in and around NYU.

This weeks event, tonight’s event actually—and I apologize for the short notice, but I couldn’t let this one slip by you…Besides that, what are you doing on a Wednesday night, farealsies—is called “After  Affects.” Whooo.

The breakdown:

Damaged Romanticism: A Mirror of Modern Emotion, a highly imaginative, emotionally charged exhibition currently on view at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery, features work by 15 contemporary artists who have revitalized the tenets of Romanticism, but with a twist. Working in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed-media installation.

Eve Metzler, and associate prof here at NYU will be talking about Albrecht Dürer’s Melancolia in relationship to Robert Morris’ Blind Time V: Melancolia. The result of which they seem to be terming an aftermath and it somehow all relates to the exhibition, now in NYU’s Grey Art Gallery about damaged (click it Russell) romanticism …

Mmm. Yeah, I actually have no clue what that means.

I always forget who Dürer is until I see his wikipic and then go “Oh yeah, the one that looks like Gary Oldman. He’s hot” and I have no idea who this Morris guy is. However, that’s what the event is all about. What’s the point of hearing a lecture on something you already know about? That was what Writing the Essay was for, silly. Become aquatinted with artists you don’t know new and old, be exposed to some culture for free, have a little school spirit (cause God knows we don’t have it), and bring it up this weekend at a party and act like you know a little something. People want to date people who know things about art.

Yes, men. Didn’t you know women pick their mates by being able to smell your culture? It’s better than Axe. Just don’t be pretentious. What we lack in school spirit we often make up for in asshattery.

Just be at the Silver Center tonight at  7:00 room 300. You’ll see me there. I’ll be the one smelling all the men for culture.

 XOXO
