Jimmie Johnson's fourth consecutive championship is but a formality at this point. More than one full race ahead of his closest competitor (Mark Martin, at 184 points out), it would take a collapse of gargantuin proportions for Johnson to lose this year's title. Still, that doesn't mean the likes of Jeff Gordon have nothing to race for in the final three races.
Gordon, who will miss out on his fifth championship simply because of bad luck (his performance has solid, if not quite strong, in this Chase) remains focused on winning to close out the 2009 season. Even though he brought an end to his much publicized winless streak at Texas in April, another one has gone on since then, as Gordon hasn't been to victory lane since. Perhaps Texas would be an appropriate place to grab one more victory?
Given how strong Gordon has been on the intermediate ovals this year, it only seems logical that Texas, or even Homestead, would suit him well. For that matter, it would also be fitting for Gordon to win at Honestead, given his win at Texas was his first at the track, and a win at Homestead would also be the first for him at that track. Perhaps, for the second time this year, he could kill two birds with one stone?
It may take a catastrophic failure on behalf of Jimmie Johnson for Gordon to even have a chance at a title, but that doesn't mean he still can't win races. Victory will certainly be possible this weekend. Besides, maybe having the pressure of a title fight removed will make him and the team even more agressive, given that they reall have nothing to lose?
Regardless, that is what Gordon's focus will be in the final three race: wins. A championship is simply out of the question.
