With the economy in yet still a blunder, it’s hard to imagine a profitable holiday season—even for game developers.  As gaming consoles and games themselves typically reveal their best work during this particular quarter each year, this years fourth quarter won’t be nearly as pretty.  Developers seem to be straying away from holiday releases in order to make themselves more profitable in the second and third quarters of next year.

That said, one other particular variant is played into the mix—Modern Warfare 2, MW2.  With the holiday season release—November 10th—a lot of developers are wandering away with their tails between their legs.  Rightfully so, they should be.  Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, COD4, generated the largest hype that Infinity Ward has ever witnessed.  Not that Infinity Ward’s previous titles weren’t notable, COD4 captured an enormous population of gamers—more than 13 million gamers purchased a copy of the game by May 2009, according to Gamedaily.com.  It received so much a response that Infinity Ward was able to break away from the Call of Duty franchise all together.

Modern Warfare fans plan to stay true to purchasing the next edition the morning it hits shelves.  What this means is other titles may, and probably will, suffer.  Thankfully, there are developers out there that are either confident in their product or willing to take the risk.  Below is a list for this fourth quarter’s 2009 game releases courtesy of Game Informer Magazine:

  • Borderlands (PS3, 360, PC)—October 20
  • Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City (360)—October 29
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (PS3)—October 27
  • Dragon Age: Origins (PS3, 360, PC)—November 3
  • Modern Warfare 2 (PS3, 360, PC)—November 10
  •  Assassin’s Creed II ((PS3, 360, PC)—November 17
  •  Left 4 Dead 2 (360, PC)—November 17
  • New Super Mario Bros. (Wii)—Holiday
  • The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)—Holiday
