Sixty-three years ago today, battle weary American and Soviet soldiers met for the first time on German soil, at the small town of Torgau on the Elbe River. American and British forces had steadily pushed the remnants of Hitler's Wehrmacht east, while the Red Army pushed them west.  Less than two weeks later, the Allies declared VE Day (Victory in Europe).  The United States Military Liaison Mission Association has a good piece on the subject.
