Sherri Langburt was 24 when she made the conscious decision to be independent and focus on her career. While Sherri was confident about this choice, she quickly realized that, as a single adult, she was part of a portion of the population that faced myriad negative stereotypes and was offered little to nothing in the way of support and resources. Where many people might have seen a disadvantage, Sherri saw an opportunity - to create a resource that spoke directly to single adults.
In 2007, after several years of building a strong career base in marketing, business development and global media, Sherri brought her concept to life in the form of Single Edition Media, which reaches out to singles through SingleEdition.com, content syndication, lifestyle events and seminars. Until the launch of Single Edition, the only websites targeting single adults were dating sites, which inherently imply that being single is a condition to be corrected. Not any more. For those who are single by choice, content with being single, or simply not in any rush to couple up, SingleEdition.com serves as a comprehensive lifestyle portal providing advice, information, and discussions on everything from career, finance and real estate to fitness, sex and health. (Author's note: there is plenty of great advice from trusted sources on the site that can apply to both singles and non-singles alike. Don't hesitate to check it out!)
In a recent phone interview, I asked Sherri about her own entrepreneurial path, resources for other single entrepreneurs and the reasons this segment of the populations is so often overlooked.
What are the unique challenges associated with being a single entrepreneur? According to Sherri, there are two primary challenges faced by single entrepreneurs. The first is financial - you are operating on a single income. The second is emotional - you don't have the emotional support that a partner often provides. Being smart about finances and surrounding yourself with an emotional support network of friends, families and colleagues will help a single entrepreneur overcome these hurdles.
How does SingleEdition.com help entrepreneurs? SingleEdition.com provides feature articles that address key business issues. Entrepreneurs also have access to a panel of career professionals who act as consultants by answering questions and providing sound advice.
Sherri created SingleEdition.com as a great place for single adults to turn for advide, information and support. Who has she turned to throughout her career for support and inspiration? Sherri has had the good fortune of working with some great people throughout her career. When it came time to build her business she turned to marketing, technology and design people that she trusted and worked well with to be a part of her team. For inspiration, Sherri reads a great deal and follows companies that she admires.
Finally, why do businesses so often neglect this segment of the population? This is where many of the negative stereotypes of single adults come into play. Advertisers still seem to think that singles make less money and aren't worth targeting. Companies have had success targeting specific groups over and over (think moms, teens, families, seniors) and are afraid to break the mold. Sherri strongly feels that companies would be wise to recognize that this demographic is rapidly becoming larger and more successful than ever before and would benefit from acknowledging this change.
